These Raku planters are designed as a decorative piece, perfect for styling shelves, coffee tables, or as a standalone statement. It is ideal for air plants or succulents that require minimal watering. Due to the porous nature of Raku ceramics, it is not watertight and should not be used for plants that need frequent or heavy watering.
What is Raku?
Raku refers to both a distinctive pottery style and a unique firing process that dates back to 16th century Japan. Traditionally linked to Zen Buddhism and the tea ceremony, Raku ware embraces the philosophy of Wabi—aesthetic values centred on simplicity, harmony, natural beauty, and imperfection. Pieces are often organic in form, with irregular shapes and richly textured surfaces that make each item completely one of a kind.
In Western interpretations, Raku has evolved into a more experimental, “no-rules” approach to making and glazing. However, the defining characteristic remains the rapid firing and cooling process, which produces the signature crackled glazes, metallic finishes, and beautifully unpredictable patterns.
Important Note – Due to the nature of the Raku firing process and the porous clay body, Raku pottery is not food safe. It is not suitable for holding food, beverages, or water.
