The Newport Power Station Gatehouse artwork is dedicated to the grand, heritage listed building located in the shadows of the Newport Power Station in Melbourne’s west. The gatehouse is one of the last remnants of the earlier coal-fired power station on the site, replaced in 1980 with the current gas-fired power plant operating today.

As well as the gatehouse, other surviving elements include railway sidings, coal wharves and the store lined channel leading out to Hobsons Bay, through which cooling water was drawn into the power station.

Warm water was discharged to the river through the ‘warmies’ where fishing was good but turbulence made it a dangerous place to swim.

Some mature trees, including Canary Island Palms and Monterey Cypresses at the northern end of Douglas Parade, Newport, are survivors from the original gardens.

The gatehouse is aesthetically significant as an example of Edwardian era public architecture and the remaining trees provide an appropriate Edwardian landscape setting.

Available in A4 and A3 sizes.
